NOTES FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS
Noosa is situated at the northern end of a tourist strip known as the Sunshine Coast. It is approximately 90 minutes north of Brisbane International Airport, where reserved car rentals are available and also an excellent bus service, which takes around two hours. Domestic travellers or internationals arriving through Sydney or Melbourne may take advantage of the many flights to Sunshine Coast Airport, just 35 minutes south of Noosa.
Noosa is regarded as Australia’s premier beach resort village, with a very high standard of accommodation, service, shopping, dining and entertainment. More importantly, its idyllic setting is home to five right-hand point breaks, leading from town out through a pristine national park. During Australia’s autumn (March to May), Noosa enjoys perfect surfing conditions, with offshore winds and consistent swell creating one to two metre perfect waves. The Festival uses only one point (First Point) for competitive surfing, so there are plenty of places to free-surf during the event. In addition, there are excellent beach breaks at Noosa West or along the Eastern Beaches, depending on swell and wind.
In March, Noosa’s climate is close to ideal, with cool trade winds tempering day-time temperatures in the high 20s, with humidity moderate to high. Showers are common, but there is more than enough sunshine every day. In fact, Noosa’s autumn sun can be intense, so keep the Banana Boat 30 Plus handy at all times, and wear a hat. The sun rises and sets at about six o’clock.
There are many day trips you can make out of Noosa, so you might want to stay a few days extra at either end of the festival. The Noosa River system is pristine and beautiful, and ready to be explored. Fraser Island, a World Heritage Reserve and the biggest sand island on the planet, is just a couple of hours north, and deserving of at least an overnight stay. (Tours and 4WD only.) The late Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo is less than an hour south, and well worth a visit. And if you haven’t had enough surf, the Gold Coast’s Superbank at Snapper Rocks is less than three hours’ drive south, with Byron Bay’s mellow points and sneaky peaks another hour on top of that.
If you like finding stuff for yourself, then the Noosa region is perfect for you. Whether it’s village craft markets (Eumundi, Yandina, Peregian), cool mountaintop cafes and bars (Montville, Maleny) or just old school cool (try Cooroy or Pomona), there’s so much to see and do, you won’t believe you didn’t book for longer.
