DIVISION RULES & REQUIREMENTS NOOSA FESTIVAL 2010
By Contest Director Alan Atkins

1. General Information & Registration:
Please check in and register your presence in advance at Noosa. Your place may be already taken if you just turn up at the beach for your heat. Registration times at the Golden Breed registration centre will be on the Festival website.
All entries for LQS events must be made through ASP Australasia on their official website. All other events [specialty, teams and age] must be entered through the official Noosa Festival of Surfing website by credit card or by downloading the entry form and sending with a cheque to the entry address.
We will have an official noticeboard next to the judging podium at the First Point site, and at the Festival Village at all times. The daily schedule of events and progression sheets for all divisions will be posted there. All official information for competitors will also be there, so read it each day to see what’s going down. Daily schedules and heat draws will also be available online at www.surfingaustralia.com or the Noosa Festival website www.noosafestivalofsurfing.com.
A notice will be placed at the First Point podium at 6.15am to indicate the contest location each day, and the same information will be posted by 6.30am on the Festival website and broadcast on Zinc 96.1 FM. First heat will enter the water promptly at 7.00am.
Please be at the Beach Marshall Desk, next to the judges’ podium, minimum ten minutes before the start of your heat to collect your contest jersey. Put it on in the presence of the Marshall, then at the direction of the announcer, you can enter the water [usually with five minutes to go]. Keep your jersey on until you come back to the Marshall. This is essential as photos are taken at all times. On the paddle out, please keep well clear of the competitors in the current heat.
Competitors’ Notes: USE CAREFUL WAVE SELECTION AND MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT CATCH WAVES WITH NO POTENTIAL TO INCREASE YOUR SCORE.
Please read the event waiver posted on the notice board at the daily event site and on your entry form.
Note that the surfboard specifications are the same for all longboard divisions including all juniors. No specifications exist for SUP surfing boards at this time.
2. Age Events:
Age events are all being conducted under the Surfing Australia Rulebook and your two [2] best waves will make up your score. Quality not quantity will win the day!
3. Pro Divisions:
Will surf under the rules of ASP Australasia as these are sanctioned on the World Longboard Tour. Tandem events are under the sanction and rules of the Australian Tandem Surfing Association.
4. Locations
Our selected event locations will be First Point and Noosa West Beach (Access 12). It will be important for you as a competitor to keep up to date with where and when your heat is to be held. If we move between locations, we will be as fast as possible and keep the event flowing. We will be running live scores online all week irrespective of venue. First Point is our “prime location”.
5. Results
Progression heat sheets will be updated during the day as results come in, so you can check out your next heat and who you are up against. The final results for the day will be uploaded to the sites by early evening. All age divisions will be six surfer heats.
6. Stand-up Paddle Surfing [SUPS]
SUPS will be conducted under the rules in the Surfing Australia Rulebook.
SUP Judging Criteria.
“A surfer must perform radical controlled manoeuvres, using the paddle as a key tool, in the critical sections of a wave with speed, power and flow to maximize scoring potential. Innovative / progressive surfing as well as variety of repertoire [manoeuvres] and the functional use of the paddle to increase the intensity of the manoeuvres, will all be taken into account when awarding points for SUP surfing.
The SUP surfer who executes these criteria with the maximum degree of difficulty and commitment on the waves will be rewarded with the higher scores.”
All SUP will be 6 surfer heats.
7. Golden Breed Noserider Trials & Main Event:
The eight semi-finalists from the 2009 Golden Breed Noserider are seeded into the main event. Any vacancies in the seeded eight will be filled at the discretion of the organisers.
Trialists will be seeded into eight heats of four [4] surfers, and time on the nose will decide each heat winner, who will move on to the Main Event to meet the eight [8] Invitees.
Core Rules: Each board will be taped 50cm back from the nose. The rider will be timed for his time in front of the line [WHILE HE IS HANGING FIVE] with a DOUBLE POINTS BONUS for any time he HANGS TEN. Two judges will evaluate each rider individually so the timing is accurate. This means we will be running an eight judge panel during these heats. Hanging ten will be defined as “both feet relatively together on the nose with all toes over”.
8. GSI One Design Invitational:
Watch this space! GSI will have another ripper from its retail quiver for a performance test.
9. Family Teams Challenge:
Teams will consist of two [2] surfers of any gender, but only one team can be registered per family. Team members must be separated by at least one generation and be related by birth.
Each Heat will consist of 3 teams [6 surfers] each surfer wearing separate coloured vests. All normal event rules will apply as in other age divisions. Surfers may ride a maximum of 10 waves each with the best single wave score of each team member added together to make up the total team score.
Progressions:
Round 1 to Round 2 – 8 heat winners plus highest 4 other teams
Round 2 to Semi final - 4 heat winners plus highest 2 other teams
Semi final to Final - 2 semi-final winners plus the highest other team.
10. The Old Malibu division will be conducted under Surfing Australia rules and equipment used must be produced prior to 1968. An appointed “eminent historical sub-committee” chaired by the Contest Director, will adjudicate on any protest regarding equipment.
11. The Legends Exhibition will feature our elders of the surf and be conducted in a more gentlemanly fashion than other divisions, with special awards criteria.
12. Our Tandem competitors will surf under the rules of the Australian Tandem Surfing Association, who will also provide technical support.
13. The Alaia Exhibition will feature a number of riders and a special criteria for awards. Normal contest rules will not apply.
THE NOOSA/MALIBU TEAMS CHALLENGE AND OTHER SPECIALTY EVENTS WILL APPEAR HERE SOON.
