Press release from 2008 - “WRECKS & RELICS SURF IT UP IN NOOSA”
The best senior surfers in Australia will be strutting their stuff in Noosa next month when the Noosa Malibu Club presents the fourth annual Wrecks & Relics Over Fifties Contest.
Sponsored by Madills Noosa, Robert August Surfboards, Greirson Wines and Laguna Bay Lager, and supported by Classic Malibu, Pacific Longboarder, The Reef Hotel, FCS, Short Straw and Banana Boat sunscreen, the Wrecks and Relics features many former Queensland and Australian champions and leading figures in the surf industry who are still surfing through middle age and beyond.
The Over 65 division is expected to be strongly contested, with Rip Curl founder Doug “Claw” Warbrick already signed up and the expected return to Noosa of the world’s oldest competitive longboarder, Barry “Magoo” McGuigan, 79. Magoo, who turns 80 later this year and plans to celebrate with a surf trip to a remote Indonesian reef, recently won the over 60 division at the Malfunction at Kingscliff, and is in devastating form, which he credits to healthy living, yoga and, of course, a surf every day.
The Wrecks & Relics features four over 50 men’s divisions, one women’s and an “old mal” division in which surfers ride boards almost as old as themselves. Noosa Malibu Club president Paul Winter, along with wife Libby an eligible relic for the first time this year, described the two-day event as one of the friendliest on the longboard calendar.
“The club always planned it as a get together rather than a serious comp, and it’s a great opportunity to catch up with old mates over a surf and a beer or two. But it doesn’t pay to under-estimate the competitive nature of the old blokes. They’re gnarlier than the kids, and the standard of surfing is very high.”
The Wrecks and Relics will be held at First Point, Noosa, or wherever there are waves, over the weekend of June 21-22.
From 2005 - “SENIOR SURFERS SET TO STORM NOOSA”
The Noosa Malibu Club is hosting the inaugural Over 50’s ‘WRECKS & RELICS’ Longboard Contest at First Point Noosa (or wherever the closest surfable waves are found) on 21 & 22 May 2005.
Club members saw a need for such a contest as a result of the large numbers of entries which are submitted each year for the Over 50’s & 55’s divisions of the Noosa Festival of Surfing. They are keen to promote the active, healthy lifestyle that surfing embraces as well as the social benefits of meeting and competing with your peers. Even surfing has an aging population and the Wrecks and Relics comp caters well for this with Men’s Over 50, 55, 60 and 65, Open Women’s Over 50 and Old Mal (that’s the board, not the rider) divisions.
There will be heaps of giveaways, free BBQ breaky, great bar & food prices at the Noosa Heads Bowls Club and nice trophies for those that excel. To qualify you must be Over 50 as of 21 May 2005.
Sign-on is at the Noosa Bowls Club, Noosa Junction between 6 & 8pm Friday 20 May. It’s all about fun so come and join us, relax and enjoy Noosa’s hospitality.
